How to Keep the Home Cool When Your A/C is Not Functioning Properly

Limit Home Sun Exposure
Ensure that all windows and doors are tightly sealed. Closing your blinds or covering the windows with curtains or sheets will reduce the amount of sun-generated heat in the home – bonus points if you have blackout curtains! West- and South-facing windows allow for more intense heat, so be especially cautious of these.

Unplug Unnecessary Electrical Items
Things that use electricity often give off heat as well. Turn off lights that are not LED or CFLs, and unplug your TV and computers if you are not using them. Computer systems are often built with fans that blow hot air out and away from the battery.

Avoid Adding More Heat
The last thing you want to do in a warm home is add more heat. Avoid cooking with the oven or stovetop, which might mean eating salads or cold cuts for the time being. You may also want to avoid using a dishwasher or laundry machine, and definitely avoid taking hot showers.

Change Your Ceiling Fan Setting
If possible, turn the direction of your ceiling fans counter-clockwise. This will make sure that the hot air is being pulled up and the cool air circulates underneath.

Create Makeshift Air Conditioning
Besides ceiling fans, you may own floor or tabletop fans. These by themselves are great for air circulation but not necessarily cooling a home down. To amp up their function, you can either drape cool, wet clothes over them or set a bowl of ice in front of them.

Client Testimony
“Rich Munson was extremely helpful in purchasing our new home. He answered all calls, answered all questions, and was a pleasure to work with. I don’t normally write reviews but I just had to for Rich. He is knowledgeable and so helpful, which made purchasing a home from across the country seem easy. We would 100% use him for any future needs. Definitely a great guy and feel lucky to have found an honest and trustworthy Realtor who by far exceeded our expectations. We are grateful to have found him.”
